Sunrise at Dashashwamedh: a first-timer's guide

Everyone tells you to see the sunrise from a boat. Almost nobody tells you when to get on it, which is the part that decides whether you see the city wake up or watch it from a jetty while it happens without you.

Board before 5:30am

The light that people photograph — the flat gold that turns the sandstone the colour of turmeric — lasts about twenty minutes. It starts before the sun clears the far bank. If you are still walking down the steps when that happens, you have missed it.

What you will actually see

In rough order, over about ninety minutes:

1. Bathers. First light brings the first pilgrims into the water. This is not a performance and it is not for you — put the camera down for a few minutes.

2. The akhara. Wrestlers train on the steps near Tulsi Ghat. You will hear them before you see them.

3. The laundry. Dhobi Ghat gets going around six. Hundreds of metres of cloth going out to dry, all at once.

4. Manikarnika. The cremation ghat, working as it has done continuously for centuries. Boats keep their distance and nobody photographs it.

The ghats worth knowing by name

• Dashashwamedh — the main ghat, and where the evening aarti happens. Busiest, most photographed.

• Assi — the southern end. Quieter, younger crowd, good chai.

• Manikarnika — the burning ghat. Go quietly.

• Kedar — striped red and white, and the most photogenic frontage on the river.

Practical things nobody mentions

• It is cold on the water until the sun is properly up, even in April. Carry a shawl.

• The steps are wet and worn. Sensible shoes, not flip-flops.

• Cash is easier than UPI at 5am, though most of our boatmen take both.

• There is no toilet on a boat. Plan the chai accordingly.

If you only have one morning

Board at Assi, go north with the current to Manikarnika, turn around. Ninety minutes.
If you have two mornings, do the same route in reverse on the second day — the light hits the other bank entirely differently.

The river is not a view of the city. It is where the city looks at itself.
